New Head of Department of Transportation; Is She the Right Woman for the Job?

With the retirement of Norman Mineta from the Department of Transportation we see a new nomination to be approved by the Senate. President Bush has nominated Mary Peters. But is she the best woman for the job? Some say they do not like her stance on toll-ways, as they hurt the economic vitality of our nations transportation and distribution infrastructure. Where as I tend to agree with that in a broad sense, I do believe that Mary Peters makes sense for other reasons.

You see I am against toll-ways owned by the government, but have no problem with corporate infrastructure built for return on investment being built and financed over time thru tolls. So, why do I like Mary Peters? Well I have watched the Arizona Department of transportation deal with their excessive growth over the years and have been in impressed with they way they had handled the transportation needs there with the 202 and 101 loops, as well as the I-10 expansion projects. And how all these worked with regional airports and Sky Harbor in PHX.

Additionally the transportation hubs, corporate distribution centers and airports are all working good together. All in all Arizona has done a good job of retro-fitting old infrastructure with the new demands of the exploding population growth there. So this is why I am pro-Mary Peters. And think this is a very good choice. Consider all this in 2006.

Traffic Congestion is Bad and Fuel Prices Too High; Lance Rants

Many politicians suggest we spend money building up our infrastructure in America. Indeed good idea, however on second thought consider this; infrastructure and highway planners are to blame for serious congestion throughout the nation. Ever wonder why you are stuck in traffic and feel more as if you are in a parking lot than a Freeway or highway?

Did you know that over 7.8 Billion Dollar economic loss to trucking companies and the economy from congestion slowing trucks alone. Sure, consider your own wasted time in traffic at rush hour. The American Trucking Association Chairman calls it “A Crime” and merely another version of “breadlines.” Personally I could not agree more. But in the trucking industry consider all the other challenges such as; Driver shortages over 20,000 currently in trucking and Diesel prices at $3.00 per gallon. How about all those new and inexperienced drivers take their tolls on safety and efficiency.

The flows of transportation are critical, but when traffic is already a mess, it is not a smart time to start doing lots of road construction, unless you are building totally new freeways or highways without impeding the current traffic. When will we get these politicians to understand that? A sign which says “road construction ahead” really says, we are going to steal 30-minutes of your life and there is not a damn thing you can do about it. You are a prisoner of our political pet project, so deal with it.
